Towing an automatic

I own a 2007 Pontiac Vibe (Automatic transmission – front wheel drive) that I want to tow on my EZE-Tow dolly behind my motorhome.
The Dolly Owners Manual and the video show that the steering wheel on the car when installed on the dolly should be able to turn freely (with front wheels up). The owners manual says this can be done in “Park” with the key in the Accessory position if the steering column is locked.
I can do this but would much prefer not to leave the key in the ignition since I can unlock the steering column by leaving the car in Neutral (There is a button beneath the Shifter that can do this).

Is it safe to do this ?

Does the car have to be steerable when on the dolly ? To me, it makes sense to do so ?

Alan,
It makes sense to me also that the car should be steerable on the dolly, but I can't give you a definitive answer on this. My suggestion is to talk with some service people at Pontiac about their manual's instructions being at odds with the dolly's instructions. You could also try to find someone who has experience with this sort of car/towing setup - maybe by checking on other RVing sites. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Susan
